Navigating participatory research: A visual guide (2022)

Navigating participatory research: A visual guide (2022) was developed through the Participatory Research Innovation and Learning Labs (PRILL) project, coordinated by Durham University’s Centre for Social Justice and Community Action. The guide was co-developed by a self-selected group of university and community researchers who previously participated in the PRILL workshops. The visual guide builds on the PRILL Innovation labs’ invitation to employ metaphor and symbolism to learn about PR and invites interested readers to join the ‘adventure’ as they navigate and reflect on their personal PR learning ‘journey’ through the use of visual imagery, storytelling and symbolism.

The visual guide offers:

  • An introduction to the ‘journey’ of participatory research and key processes;
  • An overview of the four principal PR islands (The Island of Initiating Engagement and Maintaining Relationships; The Island of Shared Understanding; The Island of Input and Resources; and The Island of Process and Ownership (see PRILL Visual guide 2023: 19-48). The four islands were developed by the PRILL working team after synthesising and analysing participants’ experiences and reflections of doing PR, after PRILL WS1;
  • An introduction to the visual guide’s glossary aimed at supporting the development and understanding of metaphorical conceptualisations of PR.

Consolidating the learning in PRILL and translating that into this visual guide, relied on the enthusiasm and commitment of the production team, coordinated by Sui-Ting Kong with Alison Duffell, Andrea Lambell, Andrew Orton, Andrew Russell, Cait Jobson, Janelle Rabe, Zijie Lin, Gaynor Trueman, Pablo Munzo-Roman, Sarah Banks, Sue Shaw, Yvonne Moffitt and Nelli Stavropoulou.

The visual guide is available on the Centre’s website and can be accessed here.
